The Chair in the Corner

The Chair in the Corner

There’s always a chair in the corner.

You know the one.

It’s the thing pulling at your attention when you’re trying to focus. The random thought. The unfinished task. The idea that shows up uninvited and insists on being seen.

For a long time, I fought that.

I’d get frustrated. Try to force focus. Tell myself I should be better at this. More disciplined. More locked in.

That never worked.

What’s worked for me is simpler.

I acknowledge it.

“I know you’re there.”

Not judging it. Not chasing it. Not pretending it’s not happening.

Just noticing it… and then I come back.

I come back to my thinking. I stay calm. I breathe.

And I do that again. And again. And again.

Because that’s really what focus is. It’s not something you find once and hold onto all day. It’s something you return to.

And there’s value in that return.

There’s value in me being me.
I am enough. I was enough, and I am enough.

Not because I’m perfect. Not because I never get distracted. But because I’m willing to come back. With a little more awareness. A little more grace.

Less control. More kindness.

Less force. More return.

This is what helps me.
